Domestic abuse and help from the Mosque

 

1. Mosques are at the heart of the Muslim community and can play a pivotal role in addressing domestic abuse. Nour DV is conducting research on womens' personal experiences when approaching mosques for help. We are particularly interested in hearing from women who have contacted their mosques in relation to domestic abuse either for themselves or on behalf of someone else.

2. What was the nature of you contacting your mosque (e.g. help with khula, on behalf of a friend who was in abusive marriage, Islamic advice etc)

 

3. How many times did you approach your mosque and who did you speak to? (Position in the Mosque i.e. imam, admin staff, chairman etc)

 

4. Was the mosque representative approachable and sensitive to your needs?

 

5. Did you feel you had a safe place to speak openly about your situation?

 

6. Did you feel the mosque was equipped with the necessary information to help you?

 

7. How many months/years have you endured abuse before you approached your mosque for help?

 

8. What advice were you given?

 

9. Have you seen any examples of good practice in a mosque? If yes, please elaborate.

11. Does your mosque have information in the form of a poster or leaflet on how to get help if you are in an abusive marriage?
