Home Owners and Insulation

Dear Sir or Madam,

Re:       Dissertation BSc (Honours) in Building Surveying

I am currently undertaking a Bachelor of Science Degree in Building Surveying at the University of Kingston. In fulfillment of this degree I am required to research a topic area and produce a dissertation. The topic I have chosen is “Energy used in residential properties can be greatly reduced by using conventional insulation rather than the use of renewable energy technology.”

I am investigating how insulating the existing stock of housing can reduce energy consumption more than renewable energy technology, which include wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps and solar water heating.

As a part of my research I have compiled a short questionnaire. I would be very grateful if you could find the time to complete this short questionnaire. The information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality and no person will be identified.

Thank You.

1. Questionnaire

1. What type of house do you own?

2. How many bedrooms does your house have?

3. What type of construction is your house?

4. Does your house have a Cavity Wall or Solid Wall?

5. Is insulation installed in your house?

6. Which part(s) of your house are insulated?

7. Did you know everyone is entitled to a grant for insulation?

8. What type(s) of insulation do you have in your house?

9. Would you insulate your house to reduce Energy Consumption & Energy Costs?

10. What is the maximum amount you would spend on insulation before deciding not to install?

11. In how many years would you want the insulation installed to pay for itself?

12.

KEY:    Microgeneration includes small scale wind turbines, ground source heat pumps, solar thermal collectors, and solar electricity.

Would you install Microgeneration to your house?

13. If Yes, What type(s) of Microgeneration would you install?

14. What is the maximum you would spend on Microgeneration before you decide not to install?

15. In how many years would you want the Microgeneration installed to pay for itself?

16. What are your views towards insulation and reducing energy consumption through the use of insulation?

17. What are your views towards microgeneration and reducing energy consumption through the use of microgeneration?

18. Any other comments you would like to make (Optional)
