1. The Survey

Thank you for following the link to this survey - it should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Durham Cathedral, a World Heritage Site, is developing a project to enhance the experience of the Cathedral’s medieval Cloister and it is looking for views of why people do or do not visit the Cathedral and particularly its Cloister, and what would make a visit more appealing.

The existing Cloister dates from the 15th century and is made up of 4 covered linked walks or corridors, positioned around a green, the Cloister Garth. It was built to provide a covered circulation route, a place to study, exercise and teach for the Benedictine monks who lived and worshipped at the monastic priory there. The stone Laver Bowl in the middle of the Garth is what remains of the washing fountain where monks would wash their hands before entering the Refectory for their meals.

Today, the Cloister is urgent need of repair so we are developing a project to conserve the building but also to open up and better tell the stories of the Cloister to increase understanding of its significance and the way it can be used by new and existing visitors.

Durham Cathedral have enlisted the help of the consultancy, Tricolor, to undertake this survey on the Cathedral’s behalf.

The Cathedral relies heavily on the generosity of its supporters and visitors – so better understanding why people do or do not visit the Cathedral is vitally important.

For the purposes of this survey, the term ‘visitor’ refers to any and all people who visit the Cathedral – whether that’s daily, weekly, twice a year or once in a lifetime, and whether to worship, attend an event, light a candle, explore the heritage – or even to use the facilities!

We want to find out your thoughts on what has or would make you visit the Cloister, and what you would like from your Cathedral experience, including how the Cathedral could reach out into your community. If you haven't and don't think you'd visit, we want to hear from you too!

Don't worry if you have never visited the Cathedral before, or even heard of the Cloister. Your participation and feedback will really help us to have a clear understanding of what it needs to do to help reach wider audiences and enhance the experience for visitors in the future.

Thank you for your time.

If you would like to participate in the prize draw to win £75 of High Street vouchers, please enter your details as requested on the final question of the survey - a winner will be picked at random and notified once the survey is closed!
