Functional Medicine practitioners promote wellness by focusing on the fundamental underlying factors that influence every patient's experience of health and disease.
Through careful health history taking and laboratory testing(optional), your practitioner will assess clinical imbalances and lifestyle factors including:
ENVIRONMENTAL INPUTS - The air you breathe, the water you drink, the quality of the food you eat, your level of physical activity, and toxic exposures or traumas you may have experienced.
MIND-BODY CONNECTIONS - Psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social factors can all have a profound influence on your health, as can your experiences, attitudes, and beliefs. Considering these areas helps the practitioner see your health in the context of you as a whole person, not just your physical symptoms.
GENETIC MAKE UP - Although individual genes may make you more susceptible in developing certain conditions, your DNA is not an unchanging blueprint for your life. Emerging research shows that your genes may be influenced by everything you experience in your environment. That means, it is possible to change the way genes are activated and expressed.
Identifying the underlying causes of dysfunction enables us to understand how your symptoms relate to key bodily processes that are being affected. These processes occur at the cellular level which involves how cells function, repair, and maintain themselves. On a larger scale this results in:
• How your body rids itself of toxins
• Digestion & absorption of nutrients
• Structural/musculoskeletal integrity
• Immune system function & inflammatory response
• Regulation of hormones & neurotransmitters
• Psychological and spiritual equilibrium
When these natural processes are disturbed or imbalanced, they can lead to disease if effective interventions are not applied
PREVENTION IS PARAMOUNT - Virtually every complex, chronic disease is preceded by long-term disturbances in functionality, that when identified can be effectively addressed.
CHANGING HOW SYSTEMS FUNCTION - Functional Medicine practitioners offer a wide array of available interventions and will customise a treatment plan. This may include a combination of botanical medicines, nutritional supplements, therapeutic diets, and detoxification programs. They may also include counselling on lifestyle, exercise, and stress-management techniques.
CLIENT BECOMES A PARTNER - As a client, you become an active partner with your Functional Medicine practitioner. Such a partnership allows you to be in charge of improving your own health and changing the outcome of disease.
