Young Persons Application to join the Interim Youth Work Board

Introduction

The Interim Youth Work Board wants three young people to join them and help create a strong and lasting way of doing youth work in Wales. These new members should be aged 11-25 and living in Wales.

Background

The Interim Youth Work Board was set up to represent young people, youth workers and to give advice to Welsh Government about youth work in Wales.

In June 2019 Kirsty Williams AM, the Minister for Education published the new Youth Work Strategy for Wales which was developed by the Board, working together with young people and youth workers. The Strategy is our ambition for how youth work should be in Wales and also comes with a plan. Our plan describes how we are going to make things actually happen with all the people and organisations that the Board needs to work with

As part of this work, the Board has met with, and heard from, hundreds of young people right across Wales who told them that they wanted young people themselves to be part of the Board. So, they are now looking for three young people to join.

Practical Information

The role of any young people on the Board will be to:

  • attend all Board meetings (either by Skype or in person). These are held across Wales about every two months; and

  • be a voice of young people at these meetings and be part of all the decisions that the Board makes.
All Board members are volunteers so the three young people will have to have enough spare time to attend the meetings either in person, or digitally (where possible). This means you may need to check you can take time off school, college or work. Board meetings take place around Wales so if you are under 16 you must make sure you have support from an adult who will be able to travel with you.

The dates the Board is planning to meet are:

• 1st April in Gwynedd

• 12th June in Pembrokeshire

• 2nd September in Flintshire

• 14th October in Bridgend/Cardiff area

As well as the main meetings, you may be asked to do some extra work via e-mail, and may also have the opportunity to attend other meetings.

Travel expenses will be paid for all the meetings you need to go to for the Youth Work Board.

To help young people prepare for the Board meetings, current Board members will provide support and mentoring as needed.
