About your water abstraction flow conditions

The Environment Agency's abstraction reform programme wants to:
  • find better ways of protecting the environment
  • improve access to water
  • develop the abstraction service we offer you
One of the things we're doing is looking at improving the way flow controls, on abstraction licences, are managed and communicated.

What is a flow control?
A flow control tells a licence holder they must reduce or stop abstracting water when a river or groundwater falls below a certain flow or level. These restrictions protect the environment and the rights of other abstractors.

Around a quarter of water abstraction licences have these flow control restrictions.

How can you help us?
If your licence includes a flow control, we’d like to know your views about the way it currently works. We’d also like to know how we could improve things to help you and your business.
