We are looking to set up a baby welcome scheme in Warrington.

A baby welcome scheme aims to create a more comfortable and supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers and families when they are out and about. It involves businesses and community venues actively welcoming and supporting breastfeeding.

Your right to feed your baby in public is protected by law, but knowing a venue actively supports breastfeeding mothers can sometimes mean it’s easier to relax and feel welcome and supported.

The scheme will ask businesses and community venues to meet 4 main criteria:

  1. Welcoming and supportive environment for breastfeeding mums
  2. Provision of an area that provides some privacy for breastfeeding mums
  3. Staff are informed of the Baby Welcome Scheme, the law and the commitment of the business and are trained/supported to be supportive of the needs of breastfeeding mothers. Includes commitment to uphold a woman's right to breastfeed.
  4. Display a sticker/promotional material to promote Baby Welcome scheme and Healthy Start and at the establishment

Additional optional criteria could be:

  • Space for and accessible entrance for pushchairs/wheelchairs
  • Facilities where baby can be changed and/or facilities where food could be warmed up
  • Staff training – Brief version 30 mins or comprehensive training - 2-day training (dependant on venue)
  • Signposting to information and support on - Pregnancy, baby and parenting advice, Healthy Start Scheme, Healthy Start Vitamins, Baby Friendly Initiative

We would like to understand what this would mean to you as a local parent and whether you would like to contribute any ideas and suggestions about the criteria for the scheme.

The survey should take you no longer than than 5 minutes to complete and the closing date is Friday 25 July 2025.
