We have a successful programme of delivering extra care housing across the county. An area of land in Whitby on the Esk Dale School site is being developed and consideration is being given to the inclusion of an extra care housing scheme on this site. Extra care housing is usually a purpose built block of apartments or bungalows which are designed to help people remain independent in their own home for as long as possible. Extra care housing can offer many different levels of support which can be altered as a resident’s needs change. It is suitable for people whose disabilities, frailty or health needs mean standard housing is unsuitable. It is often also referred to as very sheltered housing or assisted living. Depending on the scheme, properties can be available to purchase, rent or shared ownership.
A care team is on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to emergencies that may occur within the scheme or to provide unplanned care. Planned care is also available within the scheme to meet the assessed care and support needs of residents.
Each apartment has its own front door and contains a kitchen, lounge, bedroom(s) and level access wetroom. There are currently 28 operational extra care housing schemes across North Yorkshire.
Extra care housing schemes can also operate as a hub for local services and activities. People from the local community are encouraged to visit the scheme to use the services and facilities on offer, which may include a restaurant and hairdressers together with a regular programme of activities which are available for residents and anyone who would like to join in. Where there is an established local community our aspiration is that the extra care scheme will become part of that community.
