Call for Artists: Lantern-Making Workshops Celebrating Dundee’s Greenspaces and Waterways
Urban ReLeaf, in partnership with Dundee City Council Events Team, invites proposals from artists to design and deliver a series of lantern-making workshops inspired by Dundee’s greenspaces and water-themed data, engaging participants in creative expression while fostering dialogue around urban nature, sustainability, and community identity.
These workshops will culminate in a lantern parade as part of the Dundee Hooley on Sunday 30 November, celebrating St Andrew’s Day. The lanterns will therefore need to be visible in the dark, child-friendly, easily carried as part of the parade and have no naked flames.
Deadline for Applications: Wednesday 10 September 2025
To apply, please fill in this survey below and upload any relevant documents or images.
🌿 About the Opportunity
We’re inviting artists, creative practitioners, designers, and community facilitators to apply for a £3,500 commission to help bring urban climate stories and data to life. We welcome applications from individual artists as well as collectives.
Through this commission, you’ll collaborate with local communities to creatively interpret and share data and stories gathered by Dundee residents. The goal is to make this information visible, meaningful, and engaging—sparking conversations, elevating community voices, and inspiring action.
This year, we’ll be running lantern-making workshops that explore Dundee’s greenspaces and water, culminating in a vibrant celebration at the Dundee Hooley on Sunday, 30 November, in honour of St Andrew’s Day. The Dundee Hooley is an annual celebration of St Andrew and his values of kindness and welcome. This year the parade will focus on St Andrew the fisherman and will have a water theme
This project is a partnership between Urban ReLeaf and the Dundee City Council Events Team.
💧 What is Urban ReLeaf?
Urban ReLeaf is a Europe-wide initiative helping cities become greener, healthier, and more connected by involving residents in collecting and interpreting environmental data about their urban spaces.
In Dundee, we’ve been gathering people’s perceptions of greenspaces—looking at aspects like safety, access, play, and overall impressions. This year’s Hooley theme is Water, and we’re excited to see how artists will creatively explore this through design.
If you’re passionate about community engagement, creative storytelling, and environmental justice, we’d love to hear from you!
