Embodied Carbon Dissertation Research Questionnaire

My name is Daniel Watton and I am a Building Surveying student studying at the University of Plymouth. I am currently working on my dissertation project and I am looking to collect primary data in the form of questionnaires from persons working within the construction industry.

The purpose of this survey is to determine the approach that the construction industry takes to the embodied carbon issue, and as to whether refurbishment of commercial office buildings can promote embodied carbon savings by reducing the need to construct new commercial office buildings. This will be determined by looking at the views of people working in the industry. The survey aims to determine thoughts on policy guidance, regulatory measures, and the approach that the Government takes to the embodied carbon issues that are faced within the construction of the built environment. Questions are asked on the views of the participants on as to whether embodied carbon savings can be made through the refurbishment of commercial office buildings, as opposed to the construction of new office buildings.

The survey consists of tick boxes and no written responses are required.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I greatly appreciate your participation in the survey.

1. Embodied Carbon Dissertation Research Questionnaire

Rating Scale: 1 = Strongly Disagree. 2 = Disagree. 3 = Neutral. 4 = Agree. 5 = Strongly Agree.

1. The reduction of embodied carbon within the construction industry is a key issue that needs addressing *

2. The company in which you work for are involved with predominantly new build construction projects as opposed to refurbishment projects *

3. The company in which you work for incorporates embodied carbon considerations in its business relationships with clients *

4.       The company in which you work for incorporates embodied carbon considerations when working on either new build or refurbishment projects *

5.       Lower capital costs are involved with refurbishment as opposed to new build construction *

6.       The retention, rehabilitation and reuse of existing buildings can play a pivotal role in sustainable construction *

7. A new built commercial office building is more appealing to prospective purchasers or tenants then an existing commercial office building that has been refurbished *

8. Embodied carbon assessment methods should be included in the offset of energy consumption when aiming for zero carbon construction *

9. Embodied carbon considerations require greater addressing within the construction industry through policy guidance and regulatory measures in order to reduce the quantity of carbon tied up with commercial office buildings *

10. Refurbishment of existing commercial office buildings plays a key role when aiming for a more sustainable built environment, as opposed to demolition and the building of new structures *

11. Policy guidance and Government legislation are sufficient in accounting for embodied carbon considerations and reductions within the construction industry during the construction of new commercial office buildings and the refurbishment of existing commercial offices *

12. Governmental drivers promote the refurbishment of existing commercial office buildings in a bid to reduce the requirement for new build commercial office structures *

13. A strong push in Governmental drivers, for the refurbishment of existing commercial office buildings, would reduce the requirement for new build commercial office structures *

14. Through the refurbishment of commercial office buildings, the heavy carbon consuming elements of the substructure and superstructure can be retained, thus retaining the heavy embodied carbon consuming elements of the building *

15. A refurbished commercial office building would entail a lesser embodied carbon impact than that of a new built structure *

16.       It is not possible to bring existing commercial office buildings up to modern building regulation compliance in terms of energy efficiency

*

17. Materials involved with the refurbishment of existing commercial office buildings outweigh those involved within the initial carbon outlay from a new commercial office building *

18. A new built commercial office building would perform more efficiently than a refurbished commercial office building in terms of operational energy consumption *

19. Extending the life span of existing commercial office buildings will reduce the need to construct new commercial office buildings *

20. Embodied carbon associated with the refurbishment of commercial office buildings will outweigh the initial outlay of embodied carbon involved with a new built office structure *

21. Generally, a refurbished office building will require more frequent refurbishment than a newly constructed commercial office building, thus entailing a higher embodied carbon count than that produced through refurbishment of a new built structure *
