Why we are asking these questions?
The NHS in England has created a network of regional Secure Data Environments. They are safe, online places where health and care 'data' is stored securely. Data means information, in this case about your health and care.
This data is used to help health and care workers look after you and your family. It can also be used to:
- develop new treatments and medicines
- improve and plan services better, such as GP waiting times, hospital care, social services and public health
Researchers and healthcare planners from other Secure Data Environments and similar organisations may want to see parts of your health and care data to help them understand more. Personal details like your name and address are removed, so they can’t see who you are.
Having access to larger amounts of data (your information) means researchers get better results from their studies. In the past, researchers asked GPs, hospitals or local councils for data, but this can take a long time. Using a Secure Data Environment helps them get quicker and safer access to the data they need.
Only people who work in a trusted organisation can access your records. They are:
- the NHS – who use information to improve services
- universities – who lead on ground-breaking research into healthcare
- drug companies – who make medicines
- charities – like Alzheimer’s Research or Cancer Research UK
- local councils – who provide social care or public health services
- care providers – who give people home or residential care
They must pass strict checks before they can use the data, and they cannot take the data out of the Secure Data Environment.
Because Secure Data Environments may hold your health and care data, we want to know how you feel about your data being used research and service improvement.
The survey closes on Sunday 18 October.
To be included in the free draw you need to leave your name and email at the end of the survey
