We are making a survey of gardens across the Old Shoreham area, which extends from Swiss Gardens Primary School in the south, to the cement works in the north, and from the River Adur in the west to Parkside in the east. Please take a few minutes to tell us about your garden.
Why are we doing this survey?
Our UK gardens make up an area a fifth the size of Wales, bigger than all the UK wildlife reserves put together. They are vital for biodiversity. In towns, the gardens, parks, street trees and other green spaces link together to create an ‘urban woodland’ that wildlife can move through freely. And for humans, greenery has been shown to improve our physical and mental health, cool our cities, provide shade, and counter the effects of flooding and pollution.
We don’t have to ‘re-wild’ our gardens to support wildlife, but making a few small changes can help. Even a tiny space can provide a refuge and stop-off point to birds and insects. Greening Old Shoreham and its Biomap Project would like to find out more about the gardens here in Old Shoreham and gauge the interest of residents in improving the green environment.
