Purpose of the survey
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), with support from Audio UK, is undertaking research to better understand the UK speech-audio market, including podcasts, speech radio and audiobooks.
The UK audio sector is widely recognised as culturally and economically important, but there is currently no comprehensive or consistent data on the size, structure, revenues, or workforce of the podcast and wider speech-audio industry. This lack of evidence makes it difficult to demonstrate the sector’s contribution, understand where growth is occurring, and identify the challenges faced by producers, publishers, freelancers, and platforms.
DCMS has commissioned Frontier Economics to undertake a review of the market and gather evidence on the value of the market. This survey is a key part of the evidence.
Your responses will help build a more accurate picture of:
- the size, value, and significance of the sector
- how the sector is structured across different types of activity and geography
- how the sector operates
- the composition of the sector’s workforce
The survey should take around 10 minutes to complete.
Not all questions will be relevant to all respondents (for example, some questions relate to revenues from commercial ad-funded activities which may not be relevant to providers that only work on commissioned content).
Confidentiality and data use
The survey is being delivered by Frontier Economics on behalf of DCMS. Data will be stored on a secure platform and used by Frontier Economics to provide an aggregated picture of the revenues across the sector.
- All responses will be treated as confidential and analysed in aggregate only.
- No individual or organisation will be identifiable in any published outputs.
- Any organisation or individual names collected will be used solely for quality assurance (e.g. to identify duplicate responses).
- Contact details will be used only for survey administration or, if you consent, for follow-up clarification.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute. Your participation will ensure that the diversity of AudioUK members is properly reflected in the evidence base that informs future policy discussions.
