DEFRA Survey

1. DEFRA Survey

Defra has commissioned WSP to carry out this survey to understand opinions on the production of an app and accompanying database to aid BS 4142 assessments.

You must be a legal adult to participate in this research (18+). A Welsh translation of this survey can be made available on request.

A feasibility study into a BS 4142 character correction app and supporting database, is being conducted. The app would create syntheses of the ambient sound at an assessment location (known as “auralisation-lite”) based on:

- Recordings of the residual sound at the assessment location;
- Recordings of the specific sound source; and
- The attenuation in dB of the propagation path or change in propagation path between the source and the assessment location.

The output from the app would be both a synthesis of the ambient sound at the assessment location and the results of the reference methods for tonality or impulsivity, thereby supporting a more robust assessment of industrial or commercial sound on nearby residential receptors.

The audio would be stored in a database with accompanying metadata for future use in research as well as potentially being accessible by other users of the app. This would allow users to access recordings of noise sources to use in their own assessments, similar to the way Annex C of BS 5228 part 1 is used for construction noise assessments.

Thank you for taking part in our survey, your participation and contribution will help us to determine whether an app is feasible. This survey is voluntary, and all responses will remain confidential. It should take around 20 minutes to complete. All references to “BS 4142” are to BS4142:2014+A1:2019.

This survey will remain open until 23:59 on 25th October 2024.

Your responses will be used by WSP for the purposes of this research only and will be treated in complete confidence. WSP will temporarily store, and process data provided as part of this online survey in line with the WSP privacy policy: https://www.wsp.com/en-gl/legal/privacy-policy. All raw data will be deleted after completion of the project and publication of the report.
