When elected as North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness made the safety of women and girls one of her top priorities.
We want everyone to feel safe and confident when travelling across our region - whether that’s getting to work or college, meeting friends, or heading home later in the day.
To achieve that, it’s essential we hear directly from people about their real experiences.
Feeling unsafe can impact where you go, how you travel, and the choices you make. Your feedback will help us better understand those experiences and identify where change is most needed.
This short survey asks about:
- How safe you feel at different points of your journey
- Places or times that raise concerns
- How safety affects your decisions and confidence
Your responses will be used to shape targeted action and inform the interventions we put in place to improve safety on and around transport across the North East.
In this survey:
- Wheeling refers to travelling using a wheelchair, mobility scooter, buggy, pram, or other mobility aid.
- Micromobility refers to rentable small, lightweight vehicles such as e‑scooters and e‑bikes.
Some questions ask about experiences that may be uncomfortable or upsetting. You are always in control:
- You can skip any question.
- You can stop at any time.
- You only need to share what you feel comfortable sharing.
There are no right or wrong answers. We are interested in your experiences and views.
This survey takes around 15–25 minutes to complete, depending on how much detail you choose to share.
The survey is broken down into the following sections:
- Screening questions: The following questions help us understand who has taken part in the survey, so we can see whether people have different experiences of safety when moving around the North East
- How you usually travel: This section is about the types of journeys you make and how you usually travel.
- Caring responsibilities (optional): The following questions are for people who have caring responsibilities
- Experiences while travelling: The next questions explore experiences or things you may have seen while travelling.
- Changes to behaviour and travel choices: This section asks about whether safety concerns have affected how you travel.
- Reporting, support and trust: This section asks about awareness of reporting safety concerns, confidence in how concerns would be handled, and what might help build trust in reporting processes.
- Wrap-up: anything else you’d like to share
This survey closes on Friday 29th May 2026.
