Traditionally, operational senior officers have mainly entered the Fire and Rescue Service as firefighters and progressed through the ranks, and whilst this will remain an important and valid route, the National Fire Chiefs Council has recognised the need to have a wider range of pathways to attract and develop leaders. The Direct Entry (DE) approach is proposed as one of the mechanisms to support the continued focus on developing leadership within our sector. The DE training and development programme is designed to ensure candidates have the appropriate skills and understanding of the sector in 3 key areas:
  • Command Competence
  • Proven Leadership
  • Technical understanding
As the DE project team have been developing outline programmes for the scheme, there has been engagement with professionals and representative bodies to inform the work. We now wish to seek your views on some specific questions with a wider audience and would be grateful for your consideration and response to the following questions by  Friday 29 October 2021.

The government are planning to launch a consultation in the autumn, which will also seek views on leadership in the fire sector. We will continue to work together to ensure alignment of our proposals.
