This questionnaire is part of a study being carried out by STFC and their PEER Forum group of early career scientists and engineers who are interested in how public engagement affects STFC research. You can find out more about the PEER Forum here.
For the purposes of this study, we are defining early career science and engineering professionals to include research (including doctoral students), technical and managerial posts within science and engineering environments, where the individual is within 10 years of their most recent relevant qualification, excluding career breaks.
We are interested in your experiences of managing early career scientists and engineers with respect to their participation (or not) in public engagement, whether you feel under pressure or excited to let them take part, whether your staff are regular participants or never do any. We're interested in the widest range of responses, both negative and positive, so that we might better understand the environments in which you work, the support available to you, and how your efforts are focussed. Importantly, given the rising importance being given to public engagement and impact, we are interested in how this impacts on you and your staff, your work, and your success at work.
The questionnaire should take 20 minutes for most people to complete. You do not have to complete it in one session, at the bottom of each page is a button that should allow you to save your work and come back later. The data is being stored by SmartSurvey in a GDPR compliant system, and is accessible to the STFC Public Engagement team as well as the independent researcher, Dr Charlotte Thorley. All responses are confidential, they will not be connected to any other contact you have with STFC, and they will be anonymised in any reporting. The data will be destroyed after 6 months except for your contact details, if you consent to provide them. None of the questions are compulsory, so if you do not wish to answer one you do not have to.
If you have any questions about the study or this questionnaire, then do not hesitate to contact the STFC Public Engagement Team at STFCPublicEngagement@stfc.ac.uk
