1. Dementia Friendly Hospitality

What will we be using this information for?

We will be using this information towards a guide similar to this one (Dementia Friendly Retail Guide) to encourage cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels to support people living with and affected by dementia. The guide will help these businesses to support customers living with dementia or caring for someone with dementia, and employees living or caring for someone with dementia to ensure they are accessible.

We are looking for your experiences as a customer both good and bad, what they did well, what they could have done better, how it made you feel, what you want these businesses to know and do to support people living with dementia.

For reference only

These are examples of the sections the guide will include:
  • Introduction (Scale of the challenge, why do cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels matter, what people living with dementia have told us)
  • What is dementia
  • What challenges do people with dementia face
  • The benefits of becoming a dementia friendly café, restaurant, bar or hotel
  • Training and awareness (Dementia Friends, Elearning and videos, Training)
  • Customer support (Supporting customers, products, communication channels, processes and procedures, sector considerations)
  • Supporting staff affected by dementia (Legal obligations, flexible working, supporting working carers, line manager training)
  • Information provision and signposting (Internal comms to employees, comms to customers, Dementia Awareness Week, AS Helpline, Dementia Friendly Guides)
  • Physical environment
  • Community engagement (Dementia Friendly Communities, volunteering, campaigning, fundraising)
  • Recognition (Working towards becoming dementia friendly, Local press and media, Dementia Friendly Awards)
