Whelk permit: monthly catch return

The Whelk Fishing Permit (Wales) Order 2021 applies in relation to Wales and the Welsh zone including the area of the Welsh zone that lies beyond the seaward limits of the territorial sea.

Who must complete this form?

Anyone issued with a permit to take whelk with pots in the Welsh zone is required to submit an accurate monthly catch return by 23:59 on the last day of each month as a permit condition even if they have not fished.

Failure to do so is a breach of your permit conditions and may result in enforcement action.

Providing false information or making a false statement is a breach of The Whelk Fishing Permit (Wales) Order 2021 and may result in enforcement action.

Why do we collect this information?

This information will be used to track the performance of the fishery against the Annual Catch Limit (ACL) and inform the Monthly Catch Limit (MCL) for the following month. Unlike other existing reporting systems this catch return captures effort data (number of whelk pots and soak times) and fishing location (ICES sub-rectangle) in a standard way across all fleet segments (<10m /10-12m/ >12m).

All other existing reporting requirements must be adhered to.

Further information may be found in the Whelk fishery guidance on GOV.WALES.
