What is Council Tax Support
Council Tax Support (CTS) can be claimed by people on low income to help pay their Council Tax. It is calculated using the income and household details of the claimant (and partner if they have one) and other family members living with them. Changes in income, even very small changes, and changes in household makeup will often change entitlement.
Central government sets the rules for all pension-aged households, including who can claim and how, so the council can only change the Council Tax Support scheme for working age claimants.
Across the borough of North Tyneside, there are currently over 8,000 working age Council Tax payers who receive Council Tax Support in their Council Tax.
We are legally required to consult on any proposed changes to the scheme and we’re asking you to take part in this consultation to find out what you think about our proposed Council Tax Support Scheme, which would start from 1 April 2026. We want to:
- continue to support the lowest income households;
- make the scheme easier to understand and access;
- make the scheme work better for the Universal Credit claimants;
- support families and applicants who receive a disability benefit;
- take away the need for constant changes in awards; and
- make the scheme easier to manage.
Thank you for taking the time to share your views. It should take around 10 - 15 minutes to fill in this consultation. The last day for submitting responses in 5:00pm Sunday 10th August 2025.
All responses will be dealt with in accordance with our privacy statement which can be found here North Tyneside Council privacy notice | North Tyneside Council.
