1. Help us name our gritters!

Welcome to Norfolk County Council's 'Name Our Gritters' competition 2025!

We can't wait to hear your suggestions for what you think we should name our gritters

What are gritters?

Gritters are big trucks that drive around Norfolk roads in winter spreading grit (which is like tiny bits of rock salt). The grit helps melt the ice and gives car tyres something rough to grip onto, making the road safer cars don’t slip and slide everywhere.

Gritters are great - they help keep everyone safe—throughout winter by making roads less slippy!

So have a think about what we could name these salt spraying heroes. It could be anything...the more creative the better!

If you or your class win not only will you get the honour of knowing that you named one of the gritters out on the road but  we can work with your school to organise a visit from one of our gritters, so you can see one in real life!

Each school can enter name ideas from individual pupils or as a class, and  you are allowed 6 entries per school. This means you can hold your own internal competition of class activity but each school should only submit their favourite 6 names into the competition. Parents/guardians can enter multiple children, with one entry per child.

Make sure you submit your name ideas by 24 October!

We will announce winners on 3 November.

Good luck!
