Short Term Lets in Scotland Licensing Scheme

The Scottish Government has approved legislation which will mean all short-term let properties will require a licence to ensure they are safe and the people providing them are suitable.
Local authorities will be required to establish a short-term lets licensing scheme by 1 October 2022.
The legislation was developed in response to concerns raised by residents and communities about the impact of short-term let properties on their local communities, including noise, antisocial behaviour and the impact on the supply of housing in some areas.

Short-term let accommodation requiring a licence includes:
  • Secondary letting - letting of property where you do not normally live, e.g. a second home;
  • Home letting - letting out all or part of your own home whilst you are absent
  • Home sharing - letting out all or part of your own home whilst you are there
  • Home letting and home sharing.
Further guidance on the scheme is available here.
This consultation gives you an opportunity to let the Shetland Islands Council know your opinion on how short-terms lets should be managed in Shetland.

Our survey will only take a few minutes  to complete and please be assured that all responses are anonymous.

The closing date for the survey is 2359hrs on Sunday 14th August 2022.
