Introducing A Path for our Future

The proposal to create a cycle route across Abbey Fields has been under discussion since 2016, both as a stand-alone proposal and as part of the wider improvements to the park environment. Throughout this time, requests have been made and debated around progressing delivery of a cycle route across Abbey Fields.

A joint working group was set up involving officers from Warwick District Council (WDC); Warwickshire County Council (WCC) and Sustrans (a UK based, walking, wheeling and cycling charity) with the objective of exploring the options further and producing a set of draft plans for consultation with the local community.

What is being proposed?

We are asking you to tell us what you think about a proposal to create a cycle route across Abbey Fields between Borrowell Lane and Bridge Street via the swimming pool. The proposal involves building a new walking, wheeling (wheelchairs, pushchairs etc) and cycling path across the south western area of Abbey Fields (from Borrowell Lane to the swimming pool) that would be wider than the existing path.

The existing path could be retained for walking and wheeling only, or removed. The proposed cycling route would continue past the swimming pool to Bridge Street by permitting people to cycle on the upgraded path.

What are the benefits?

We think the proposal brings a number of benefits for the local community including:

  • The proposed path between Borrowell Lane and the swimming pool would be wider than the existing path, providing more space for walking and wheeling, as well as catering for cycling.
  • Supporting people to cycle more of their local journeys by providing a traffic free cycle route to the park and swimming pool. The new route would also connect with existing traffic free cycle routes to the south and east of Abbey Fields, supporting cycle journeys across the town and beyond, including to the Kenilworth Greenway.

We understand that the proposals may raise some concerns in relation to the impact of a new path on the look and feel of Abbey Fields and the potential for conflict between people who cycle and other users of the Abbey Fields.

We are asking for your feedback on our proposals.

Why we need you

We want everyone that uses Abbey Fields to have their say, regardless of whether you’re in the park regularly, an occasional visitor, or someone who just uses the paths to pass through.

We need to know how you use Abbey Fields and what is important to you. The feedback you give will be reported to Warwick District Council’s Cabinet which will make the decision on whether and how the proposals should be taken forward.
