The byelaws relating to consumption of alcohol in certain public places within Lerwick have not been reviewed since they came into force. Shetland Islands Council (hereinafter the Council) is now considering reviewing the byelaws to ensure that they remain fit for purpose. The review and amendment processes relating to local authority byelaws are subject to statutory regulation set out in the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 (hereinafter the 1973 Act).

This consultation is non-statutory in nature and is, at this stage, an informal means of gathering local views on the matters outlined below. Should the Council look to trigger the formal review and/or amendment of byelaws processes as set out in the 1973 Act following completion of this non-statutory consultation exercise, a subsequent statutory consultation exercise would then also be arranged
