Mental Health and Wellbeing Qualification for Educators

Mental health and wellbeing have been a critical and key focus in Scottish education in recent years, which has increased further due to the impact of Covid-19 on both learners and those involved in the delivery of Scottish education. In 2018, following consultation, SQA introduced Mental Health and Wellbeing Awards at SCQF levels 4 and 5. Developed for learners, uptake of these Awards has been swift and significant, demonstrating a strong demand for knowledge and understanding of mental health. SQA received positive feedback on the Awards from both teachers and learners, and we are currently developing a level 6 qualification.

We are now turning our focus towards how we can meet the needs of educators. We are considering development of a qualification in Mental Health and Wellbeing for teachers, lecturers and other staff within Scottish schools, colleges, training providers and other educational establishments. This aim of this new qualification would be to enable staff to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to educate and support themselves, their colleagues, and their learners, on mental health and wellbeing.

The purpose of this survey is to gather the views of teachers, lecturers, and other centre staff to establish whether there is a demand for a new qualification.
