1. Unlocking The Past at St Osyth Priory
St Osyth's Abbey (originally and still commonly known as St Osyth Priory) was a house of Augustinian canons in Essex, in use from the 12th to 16th centuries. Subject to Viking raids almost 100 years before the famous attack on Lindisfarne, prior to the Reformation, St Osyth Priory was a hugely important site, and the third wealthiest abbey in the country.
Today, St Osyth Priory is an exceptional collection of heritage assets comprising 16 separate Grade I, II* and II listed buildings set within a Grade II registered historic park and garden. Privately owned but in part managed by The St Osyth Priory and Preservation Trust, the site is used for events, and there is a newly established Education Centre.
After being closed to the public for 20 years, and with the Education Centre now running and plans to have more public programming, we would really like your help as part of a wide consultation process and planning process, to understand your experiences and what YOU would like to see on offer at St Osyth Priory as we begin to plan for the future of the site to preserve its important history and buildings.
Thank you in advance for your time; we look forward to keeping you updated as the project progresses!
