Dear Resident,
As your Mayor, my vision is for a Safe, Just, and Inclusive West Yorkshire. I have promised to make Serious Violence a priority and deliver on the government’s mission of halving knife crime in a decade. The spotlight on Serious Violence in the new Police and Crime Plan is part of the journey to make this a reality.
When we consulted on the Police and Crime Plan during 2024, we received strong support for the spotlight on Serious Violence, with many highlighting its wide-ranging impact on victims, families, and communities. Serious Violence was also a key issue highlighted by the young people we engaged including those in schools, colleges and universities. Some parents voiced concerns about child vulnerability and criminal exploitation, with several sharing their own lived experiences. A number of those we spoke to discussed organised crime and its links to drugs and drug related crime, knife crime and gun crime.
With this in mind, we are now launching our consultation on Serious Violence. This will inform West Yorkshire’s Serious Violence Strategy and will be co-produced with our partners and affected communities. We want to hear your views on Serious Violence to help shape West Yorkshire’s future.
During this survey, please note my definition of Serious Violence which is as follows:
“Violence and serious violence includes specific crime types where there is the use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community. The specific crime types for West Yorkshire include homicide, knife crime, violence against the person, personal robbery, gun crime, violence against women and girls, organised crime (including county lines), sexual exploitation and domestic abuse.”
I would like to thank you for your time responding to this consultation - it is greatly appreciated.
Best wishes,
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire
