The NHS-R Community is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a five-week course on how to perform Natural Language Processing with R from September THIS YEAR! This is adapted from a Masters-level course provided by the University of Edinburgh.
This new course, supplied and taught by Dr Pawel Orzechowski of the University of Edinburgh, will be comprised of four two-week blocks, each with explanatory videos, example code and ‘homework’ tasks, culminating in a two-hour online tutorial with Dr Orzechowski (assisted by members of the Strategy Unit Data Science team). The contents of the fifth block will include a project task that will be presented back to the class in the final online meeting. Each fortnightly block will require around 3 hours of independent working from each student.
There are spaces for 40 students on this course, who will be allocated places on a first-come first-served basis provided they meet the prerequisites listed below, and can be confident that they can commit to attending all five weeks of the course.
Prerequisites:
- An employee of the NHS.
- Intermediate R skills. For example, you have worked with R for 1-3 years and are comfortable in basic syntax, using packages, and writing simple functions. If you are unsure whether your skills are ‘intermediate’, take a look at our course materials used for the ‘Intermediate R’ training provided by NHS-R to get a feel for the level expected. You do not have to know everything in that course material but should be comfortable understanding the approaches used.
- Line manager approval for committing to the course for its duration.
- Ability to attend all Teams-based online teaching sessions.
- Access to a computer with a stable internet connection, with the latest version of R installed, with a graphical user interface (GUI) for using R (e.g. RStudio, VSCode, Positron) and a Posit Cloud account (free tier is fine).
