Waltham Forest Council have commissioned a review of the system of alternative provision in Waltham Forest. An independent research and advisory organisation, Isos Partnership, have been commissioned to facilitate this review.
As part of this work, we (Isos Partnership) have designed a short survey to capture the views of primary school leaders about the current AP arrangements for the primary phase.
Alternative provision (or AP) is defined as education arranged by –
- local authorities for pupils who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not otherwise receive suitable education; or
- schools for pupils to improve behaviour or due to suspension.
AP is distinct from special educational provision for pupils with special educational needs or disability (SEND), although in reality many pupils in AP also have SEND. For the purposes of this survey, we are interested in hearing views about the support for pupils who need AP – while related, the statutory SEND system is not directly within the scope of this work.
The survey is divided into three parts.
- Questions about your school and your role (so we can track and analyse responses).
- Questions about the current “continuum” of support, including support in mainstream schools, support from targeted services, and the offer of AP.
- Questions about the wider processes that support the day-to-day running of the local AP system, including decision-making about access to AP, funding, commissioning, quality assurance, and leadership and governance.
The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Isos Partnership will treat all responses in confidence – individual responses will not be shared, and Isos colleagues will analyse responses to inform the overall themes and findings from this project. (AI tools may be used to assist with the analysis of responses - where AI tools are used, Isos Partnership will retain ownership of the data, and it will not be used for any other purposes.)
Thank you in advance for your contributions to this work.
