Monmouth Underpass Consultation

Monmouth Town Council have succeeded in gaining funding from the Wye Valley Natural Landscapes funding stream (the Sustainable Development Fund) to upgrade the Subway and the Underpass (by the Rowing Club) to smarten them up, make them more attractive and feel safer to walk in.

The idea of the project is also to enhance the understanding of what lives under the River Wye, for the subway and increase knowledge of the beauty of our landscape and wildlife above the River Wye – for the Underpass.

The project involves an artist working with young people on the designs for each area – research shows that where young people are involved in the design of murals, they are less likely to graffiti. The artist is also using anti-graffiti paint.

We would like your opinion on the two options we have for smartening up the Underpass as there are already artworks – some mosaics installed nearly a decade ago -  on one wall so we need your help deciding what to do with them – leave them or move them.

It is very important to note that no decisions have been made yet on if the mosaics are removed or not. This consultation will help the People and Places Committee of the Town Council to make that decision.

1. How often do you use the underpass?

2. How do you use the underpass?

3. As part of this project, should the Town Council...

NB It is also important to note that if the decision were taken to remove the mosaics, each of the original groups that was involved in creating the mosaics can either choose to have their mosaic back to display at their own place (e.g Kymin view school) OR they can be displayed at a prominent Monmouth venue or alternative location permanently.
