House of Lords: Adult Social Care Survey

1. Introduction

Alzheimer’s Society believes that your voice should be heard in the Lord’s inquiry into adult social care. By completing this survey, you will be making a valuable contribution in ensuring that the voice of people with and affected by dementia is heard. In turn, we would encourage both people with dementia as well as current and former carers of people with dementia to reply to this survey.

The House of Lords Adult Social Care Committee has launched an inquiry entitled 'Lifting the veil: Removing the invisibility of adult social care’, through which, they want to understand the provision of adult social care and how it can be improved. For context, the House of Lords Adult Social Care Committee is appointed to consider the planning for, and delivery of, adult social care services in England. Further information on what adult social care is can be found at the following link: Healthwatch

The House of Lords Adult Social Care Committee’s Call for Evidence outlines some of the ways that adult social care could be considered “invisible”, which you may want to consider as part of your answers, including:
  • Very few people within the general population fully understand what adult social care is, how it works and why it matters
  • People with care needs rely for much of the support on unpaid carers and, in turn, they remain invisible to institutions like the NHS and local authorities
  • Many family carers do not define themselves as ‘carers’, and, therefore do not necessarily benefit from some of the support that is available
