The NHS is rolling out the use of ambient scribing tools, AI scribes, in medical appointments to save NHS staff time on administration and free them up to see more patients.

Ambient scribing tools, or AI scribes, are AI-powered tools that automatically record, transcribe, and summarise conversations between health professionals and patients. Some AI scribes can also automatically update health records, create referral and patient letters, and suggest care-related actions or tasks (e.g. appointment scheduling or referrals).

For example: you are attending a GP appointment and your GP surgery is trialling the use of AI scribes. During the appointment you may not notice anything different, except perhaps that your doctor is not taking as many notes or typing things into their computer, as they usually do. After the appointment, a summary of the conversation and any agreed actions between you and your doctor, which has been generated by the AI scribing tool, is added to your record that you can view on your NHS App account.

We want to hear from people who have had any experience with these to date.

The experiences you share with us in this survey will show us whether information to patients about the use of AI scribes needs to be improved. This survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. For more information on how we use your data, please read our privacy notice

We’ll also share anonymised data from this survey with your local Healthwatch so they can use it to make a help make a difference in your area. For more information about your local Healthwatch see here.
