How we use your data - Have your say

As a health service commissioner, we use information about the care of patients to review, deliver and plan current and future health care services. To do this, we need to be able to see information about the care provided to patients which can include patient level data (e.g. information about an individual's care such as medication and location, but never a name or address).

We know that people feel strongly about the use of data in health and care, and we would like to better understand what is important to local people.

As a member of our People’s Network, we would like you to complete the following short survey which should take no longer than 5 minutes, to help shape our future plans.

The survey will remain open until Friday 21 February.

1. Are you aware that the NHS uses your personal data to inform and make decisions about your own personal care?

2. Are you aware that the NHS uses your patient data to help inform changes that effect the health of the wider population?  For example, for planning improvements to services or in research and innovation.

3. Thinking about the last question, to what extent do you think you understand why we do this?

4. What information would help you better understand how we use your data?

5. To what extent do you agree with the following statements?

Strongly agreeAgreeNeither agree nor disagreeDisagreeStrongly disagree
The NHS should use my patient data to improve my own care
The NHS should use my patient data to improve the care of others
The NHS should work with other organisations and companies and use my patient data to improve the care of everyone

6. Below are three scenarios where we may use your personal data locally.  Please tell us for each other whether you think you should be told or do not need to be told

Should be toldDo not need to be told
We analyse health records of patients in a part of the county to understand if local people are more at risk of certain conditions. This might result in targeted letters to invite you to specific services.
We commission a new service which involves new medication. We work in partnership with company who make the medicine and share parts of your patient record through this work.
Our local GP practices begin to contribute to a national patient record system, so that doctors and nurses have access to your health records to treat you when you are outside your local area.
