Pubic Space Protection Order (PSPO) Consultation Survey 2026
The current Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) are due to expire on the 3rd October 2026 and should be renewed, varied or discharged. The Borough Council is seeking to renew the order from the 1 October 2026 for a further three years following a period of public consultation. You can have your say by completing this survey.
Please note the consultation is not seeking views to vary the designated areas or completely prohibit the consumption of alcohol in public areas. This consultation is asking whether the Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) restriction is appropriate, proportionate, and necessary to prevent and reduce alcohol related disorder within the designated areas.
The legislation only allows for the consumption of alcohol to be restricted within public places and provides powers to Police Officers and Authorised Persons to require a person to stop drinking and/or surrender their alcohol where it's reasonably believed alcohol disorder is occurring or is likely to occur.
Failing to stop drinking or surrender alcohol when required to do so could lead to a £80 Fixed Penalty Notice or a maximum fine of £1000 on conviction.
The aim of the PSPO is not to prohibit the consumption of alcohol in public places whereby the consumption is unlikely to cause alcohol related disorder.
This consultation will open at 9am on Monday 18th May 2026 and close at 9am on Monday 15th June 2026
