Reasonable and Workplace Adjustments - Guidance for Line Managers Consultation

Introduction

0%

At NFCC, we are committed to supporting fire and rescue services in creating inclusive, fair, and psychologically safe workplaces. A key part of this commitment is ensuring that all employees, including those who are disabled, neurodivergent, or living with long-term health conditions, can thrive and contribute meaningfully.

To support this, we have developed new Reasonable and Workplace Adjustments Guidance (Line Managers). This resource is designed to help managers recognise, implement, and review adjustments that remove barriers and enable individuals to perform their roles effectively and safely.

You can access the document to review here: Reasonable and Workplace Adjustments Guidance (Line Managers)

The guidance is split over four sections for consultation, and covers:

Section 1 – Understanding reasonable and workplace adjustments

  • Guidance Introduction
  • Why do line managers need to know about reasonable adjustments?
  • What legal responsibilities should line managers be aware of?
  • How do workplace adjustments differ?
  • How can line managers create an inclusive environment for their team?

Section 2 – Identifying needs and eligibility

  • How do line managers identify who is entitled to reasonable adjustments?
  • What is considered ‘reasonable’?

Section 3 – Implementing and managing adjustments collaboratively

  • When should line managers implement reasonable or workplace adjustments?
  • How should line managers implement reasonable or workplace adjustments?
  • Who covers the costs of reasonable or workplace adjustments?

Section 4 – Reviewing and sustaining adjustments

  • What should line managers do if adjustments are not effective?
  • Recording and reviewing adjustments
  • Where can I find out more?

Before the guidance is published, we are inviting feedback on its content and language to ensure it is clear, practical, and relevant across the sector.

Please use the line numbers referenced within the document when reviewing each section. The survey will close at 17:00 on Friday 2nd January 2026.  If you experience any issues or need support accessing the toolkit or completing the consultation, please contact: PCLhub@nfcc.org.uk

What happens next?
After the survey closes, we will review all feedback and update the guidance accordingly. The final version will meet accessibility standards and be published as a web-based resource to help different audiences easily navigate and find relevant content. We aim to launch the toolkit by Spring 2026.
