Identifying preferences for financial rewards to help people quit smoking and vaping

Thank you for your interest in this survey. Please read the following sections before you proceed to the survey.

Introduction

Smoking, vaping, and financial incentives

  • Smoking seriously harms your health; smokers live about 10 years less than non‑smokers. There has also been an increase in vaping or e-cigarette use among young people.
  • Vaping can also be bad for health. Most people who smoke want to quit, but this is very difficult as nicotine is addictive. People can also be addicted to vaping, as vapes also includes nicotine.
  • Evidence shows that financial incentives, for example shopping vouchers, can increase the number of people who manage to quit.

We want to know how people in Ireland feel about offering a financial incentive to people who manage to quit smoking or vaping. This would be added to the current HSE QUIT service.

HSE QUIT service

HSE QUIT provides a treatment programme to help people quit smoking. These services include in-person clinic visits and telephone calls. People receive support from trained advisors at specific follow-up times and get free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). The staff can check if someone is still smoking using a scientifically valid breath test.

We want to know how people feel about adding financial incentives to these services.
