Dancers Connected - Dance Teacher Survey

Introduction

White & Givan recognises that dance teachers across all styles, settings and communities play an important role in developing future contemporary dancers, while also sustaining dance participation and growing audiences for dance.

Through this survey, we are interested in understanding whether touring companies, such as White & Givan, engage sufficiently with the dance teachers and practitioners, both paid and voluntary across all dance forms, who nurture future generations of dance talent while also introducing children and young people to dance as audiences from an early age across Scotland.

As a touring company that employs professional freelance dancers, we are exploring how dance companies can build stronger relationships with teachers and local dance networks to support both the development of future professional dancers and the continued training and employment of those already working in the profession. We are particularly interested in how these connections might help dancers sustain long-term performing careers based in Scotland.

We are currently developing an initiative that aims to support this ambition through stronger connections between dance companies, dancers and the communities in which people live, teach, train and experience dance.

The data collected through this survey will be used to inform our research and initiatives that support the long-term careers for professional dancers in Scotland. The findings will also contribute to wider sector research, reports and materials that support greater visibility and understanding of the dance profession in Scotland.

The findings will also help inform the development of a White & Givan internal map of Scotland’s dance ecology. If you are happy to be contacted in relation to this work – including potential inclusion in a future directory/map, or to provide further insight to support the development of the initiative – you may choose to provide your name and email address at the end of the survey.

Your contact details will only be used for these purposes and will not be shared with third parties without your permission.

This survey should not take longer than 15 minutes to complete. Taking part is voluntary and you can leave the survey at any time by closing it. All data is stored according to GDPR and saved securely and not shared with third parties. All responses are treated anonymously.

If you feel uncomfortable answering any of the questions, you can skip them and move on to the next question.

This survey is supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.

The survey is open until Friday 31 July 2026.
