Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council - Council Tax Reduction Scheme 2027-28 Consultation

A new Council Tax Reduction Scheme for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council

What is Council Tax Reduction

Council Tax Reduction (CTR) can be claimed by people on low income to help pay their Council Tax.  It is calculated using the income and household details of the claimant (and partner if they have one) and other family members living with them. Changes in income, even very small changes, and changes in household makeup will often change entitlement.

Central government sets the rules for all pension-aged households, including who can claim and how, so the council can only change the Council Tax Reduction scheme for working age claimants.

Across Nuneaton and Bedworth there are currently over 6133 working age Council Tax payers who receive Council Tax Reduction in their Council Tax.

We are legally required to consult on any proposed changes to the scheme and we’re asking you to take part in this consultation to find out what you think about our proposed Council Tax Reduction Scheme, which would start from 1 April 2027. We want to:

  • continue to support the lowest income households;
  • make the scheme easier to understand and access;
  • make the scheme work better for the Universal Credit claimants;
  • support families and applicants who receive a disability benefit;
  • take away the need for constant changes in awards; and
  • make the scheme easier to manage.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views. It should take around 10 - 15 minutes to fill in this consultation.

If you have any questions, please call 02476 376514 or email benefits.section@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk. If you prefer, we can make an appointment for you to discuss how the proposed changes might affect you.

 The last day for submitting responses is 5:00pm 5th November 2026.
