We want your view on skills needs in Wales.

Learning and Work Institute Cymru (L&W Cymru) has been commissioned by Welsh Government to undertake a Skills Audit for Wales to identify the skills needed now and in the coming years to support and grow the Welsh economy.

What is the Skills Audit for Wales?

The last formal skills audit in Wales took place in 2012 and since then the skills landscape has changed significantly alongside major political, environmental, social, technological and economic changes. It is now time to conduct a new skills audit to help prepare Wales for the future.

The Skills Audit for Wales will bring together existing evidence, analyse available data, and gather views from industry representatives, employers, skills providers and other key stakeholders to better understand skills needs. The findings will help to shape planning and decision-making of policymakers, employers, education and training providers, and other stakeholders around Wales’ strategic skills needs.

As part of the Skills Audit for Wales, we are gathering information through a call for evidence from stakeholders who would like to contribute evidence and/or their insights about skills needs in Wales. 

Why are we asking for evidence?

L&W Cymru is conducting a ‘call for evidence’ to gather evidence on:  

• The current and future skills needs in Wales, including key sectors and occupations
• How the current skills system meets skills needs, including how the skills system meets employers' needs
• What the key drivers of the labour market are now and in the future, and their impact on the skills that are needed.
• Cross-cutting skills that apply across sectors and occupations, including whether these are more prevalent in certain occupations or sectors
• How skills needs vary regionally, including the anticipated impacts of local economic development plans on skills requirements. 

What are we interested in?

We are inviting partners to contribute by sharing written evidence on relevant topics and answering a set of questions.  

We have included an option for uploading files at the start of the survey. We welcome all types of evidence, and it does not need to be written or published by the person answering the call for evidence. This can include any published or unpublished evidence where you have relevant permission to share.

Types of evidence might include:

• Primary or secondary data analysis  
• Academic or research evidence  
• Case studies
• Evaluation reports  
• Action research projects
• Other evidence of effective practice

Response to questions: This call for evidence includes optional questions to share your views on current and future skills needs, as well as the skills drivers in Wales. Within each question, we have included some additional prompts to guide you.

• Employers and employer representative bodies
• Sector and workforce bodies
• Education and training providers
• Trades Unions
• Local Government and Regional Skills Partnerships
• Local, regional and national policy makers
• Academic researchers
• Third sector, community organisations and social enterprises
• Employment support providers
• Other interested individuals

The Welsh Government is the data controller for the research. However, L&W Cymru will delete any personal data provided through the call for evidence, and anonymise the raw data, before it is shared with the Welsh Government.

The information collected during the project will be included in a report published on the Welsh Government website and possibly in other publications by L&W Cymru and Welsh Government.

Your participation in this research is completely voluntary. However, your views and experiences are important in order to help inform Welsh Government policies.
