Feral and Barn Cats on the Outer Isles

1. Trap Neuter and Return programme

0%
Cats Protection Caithness branch are aiming to provide neutering of feral and barn cats via their TNR (trap neuter return) scheme on the outer isles of Orkney by co-ordinating trips to the islands with veterinary staff from either Flett & Carmichael or NorthVet in Kirkwall. This scheme is free to landowners with costs covered by Cats Protection. Cats are not microchipped in this scheme.
The scheme will neuter, provide the first vaccination, a dose of parasite treatment (flea/worm), and a health check of feral/barn cats. Each cat will have a small amount if its ear removed to provide easy identification once released. All cats will be released at the same site of capture, as this is a requirement of the license under which the scheme operates. Cats will also be tested for FIV (feline AIDS) and FeLV (feline leukaemia); if positive, in the best interest of the cat to prevent disease transmission, the cat will be euthanised. Any medical treatment which cannot be administered in a single dose while the cat is under anaesthetic may also mean the cat is euthanised in its best interest.
The aim of the scheme is to ensure the happiest and healthiest barn/feral cats; to reduce prolific over-breeding and prevent disease transmission to pet cats in Orkney.
