The Dementia Safeguarding scheme involves issuing people with memory concerns with a wristband that uses a near field communication chip (NFC). These chips store small amounts of information (bands come pre-programmed), which can only be read with an enabled phone.
Basic details such as the name of the person and their next of kin are stored, and this can be used by members of the public who are concerned about an individual or emergency services, health professionals or community members to get the wearer back to safety should they be found whilst lost or confused.
The ‘Dementia Safeguarding Scheme’ incorporates and adds to the nationally recognised ‘Herbert Protocol’.
