Research project title: The relationship between animal abuse and Domestic Violence

You are being invited to take part in this research project. You have been chosen because you have a unique insight into experiences of being in an abusive relationship whilst having domestic animals, and ways in which victims who are fleeing from abusive relationships with their pets could be further supported. Before you take part, it is important to ensure that you fully understand why the research is being undertaken and what is involved. Please take the time to read through the following information and ask any questions that you may have. Take time to decide if you would like to take part in this study.
What is the purpose of the research?
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between animal abuse and Domestic Violence. Such as, whether people who are fleeing from abusive relationships with their animals are supported enough to make that decision. Whether it is more difficult to leave an abusive relationship whilst having domestic animals and what could be done to support people and their animals when they are escaping abusive relationships.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
The main benefit of taking part is, that you can have a unique input into researching a very important topic and sharing your ideas on how victims of domestic violence who are fleeing with animals could be further supported.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
Whilst there are no physical risks, the topic of this research is sensitive and may raise memories or topics you might find upsetting or stressful. If this is the case, you can withdraw from the study at that point. Do I have to take part?
No, your participation is voluntary.

This research does not collect any personal data, therefore your participation will be kept confidential and anonymous.
Will I receive a payment for taking part?
No, your participation is voluntary, and no payments will be received for your participation in this research.
Who has ethically reviewed the project?
This project was ethically reviewed and accepted by the University of Essex.
