This survey is aimed at better understanding how the black community is feeling on a number of issues at this point in our history. The results from this study will assist Black Community Matters (BCM) and other agencies to better understand and map the needs of the black community in Derby and help us to create a Black Community Matters Factsheet. We will also use the results of the survey to identify and highlight changes we can make to improve local community provision, including areas that we need to highlight in order to campaign for change on a wider scale but also to provide information to statutory services and organisations. This is a study about US, for US, by US.

About Black Community Matters (BCM)
Much has been written and said following the tragic events which resulted in the death of George Floyd. Key international and national events have made a significant contribution to debates, actions and the advancement of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ Movement (BLM), race and racism and in the wake of Covid-19. However, while we recognise the contribution of international and national events we also appreciate and recognise that the local community in Derby and Derbyshire might have a different experience and perspective.

To this end the members of Black Community Matters worked with other individuals to co-author the Black Lives Matter Derby Manifesto, which outlines some key areas which require change in order to improve the status of the black community in Derby. The Manifesto was launched on July 31st 2020 and has been endorsed by key statutory and other agencies and organisations. We are continuing to press home the urgency of the changes required and wait to see the actions that the various agencies and organisations will take, we think it’s now time to hear from and work with the community at the grassroots in order to build our capacity and infrastructure.
We need your help to better understand the feelings of the community and what you feel we need and should be doing in order to build for the future.
