Orkney schools and nurseries will be closed in the New Year and are expected to re-open fully on Monday 18th January.  This, in effect, means that the winter break will continue until 8th January and that the week commencing 11th January will be set aside for remote learning.

Despite this formal closure, introduced by Scottish Government Educational Directive (Number 6), educational establishments will be available for childcare on 7th and 8th January, and for face to face learning from 11th to 15th January.  Access to school will be reserved  for children regarded as vulnerable, and for those who have a parent recognised as a key worker only.

The formal definitions of  keyworker areprovided below:

Category 1 – Health and Care workers directly supporting COVID-19 response, and associated staff; Health and Care workers supporting life threatening emergency work, as well as critical primary and community care provision; Energy suppliers; all people working in schools and nurseries.
Category 2 – All other Health and Care workers, and wider public sector workers providing emergency/critical welfare services (for example: fire, police, prisons, social workers), as well as those supporting our Critical National Infrastructure, without whom serious damage to the welfare of the people of Scotland could be caused.
Category 3 – All workers (private, public or third sector) without whom there could be a significant impact.

If you consider yourself to be a key worker, and have not already applied, then please complete this form for each child for whom you are seeking childcare. Please remember that keyworkers should only make use of this opportunity where there is no other reasonable source of childcare.

Schools will be in touch with applicants at the earliest possible opportunity. There will be no communication prior to 6th January. Families of children considered to be vulnerable need not apply and will be contacted directly by schools on or after 6th January.
