London Scouts September Fundraising

1. Fundraise for Macmillan this September

Thank you for choosing to support Macmillan Cancer Support :)

For the month of September, we aim to have as many Sections as we can across Greater London supporting Macmillan Cancer Support. We are challenging the young people to come up with their own fundraising ideas and aim to raise as much money as possible. The activities can be individual or Section and Group efforts. The young people could also use this as an opportunity to gain their Personal Challenge Award.

The Sections will also be able to celebrate their achievements by hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning.

For each of the different Sections, we have some resources developed to deliver an activity in their weekly meetings put together by Macmillan. This is an optional extra that is aimed at raising awareness of all that Macmillan Cancer Support do.

FAQs

How do the young people raise money and pay it to Macmillan?
A link to a London Scouts JustGiving Campaign page will be emailed out to the group leaders taking part. As an adult is required to set up a JustGiving page, we are recommending that each group leader sets up their own page for their group. The young people can then use this link to share with friends and family. This creates a team effort and allows you to see how much you have raised as a group. You can personalise the page with details of what the young people are doing if you would like to.

If the young people would like their own fundraising page then this is still fine but their parent or carer will need to set up the page. Please send them the link to the London Scouts JustGiving campaign page so the pages are linked.

Sponsorship forms will be sent out if this method is preferred, but it is still encouraged that the cash be paid onto the fundraising page. If the cash is paid directly to Macmillan, it can be added to the page as an offline donation.

How do I explain what Macmillan do and why we are supporting them?
A link to a video will be sent for you to play to the young people. It will include details about who Macmillan are and how they can help support. It will also have Scout member, Kiwi Patel, talk about his own cancer experience and why Macmillan means a lot to him.

Can we do a group fundraiser instead of, or alongside the young people doing their own?
Yes of course! You really can do what ever you like! The more inventive the better!

Can the adults get involved?
Yes please! The more the merrier!

Do we have to deliver the awareness session?
No. We feel at Macmillan that raising awareness is just as important as fundraising, but this is of course optional. You are also welcome to change the resources to best fit your group. There are different sessions available depending on age. If you decide to do it, an example letter to send to the parents will be included.

Do we have to take part in the coffee morning?
No, but we feel it is a great opportunity to celebrate the success of the young people and gives another opportunity to raise a bit more money. And who doesn’t like cake!

When will I receive the information?
A welcome pack will be emailed out before the end of the summer holidays. This way the young people have the summer to think about what they might be doing and will be ready to go in September.

Coffee morning packs will be sent separately via the post once you sign up. Register for coffee morning here

How do Macmillan support people in London?
At least 264,800 people are living with cancer in London as of 2019. This is predicted to increase to 377,700 in 2023. Around 35,620 people in London are diagnosed with cancer each year and around 13,820 people die on average each year. It is estimated that 17% of the population of London are income deprived.

In 2022 Macmillan provided the following support to people affected by cancer in London;
5,188 Grants were given, totaling £1,961,450.
12,889 people were supported by our Macmillan Support Line.
93 Macmillan professionals were in funding.

How will our fundraising make a difference?
Every £1 spent on our telephone service could lead to welfare rights advisors on our Macmillan support line helping people affected by cancer claim £25.72 in benefits that they are entitled to.
£10 could pay for 25 copies of the new edition of Preparing a Child for Loss, a resource we’ve produced in partnership with Winston’s Wish
£33 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for 1 hour, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical, and emotional support
£132 could pay for a Macmillan support worker for 1 day, helping people living with cancer receive the support they need.
£181 could provide emotional support to one person living with cancer for around eight weeks, through ongoing and regular telephone sessions with one of our Macmillan Buddies.
A £350 Macmillan Grant could help with the extra costs that living with cancer can bring, such as the travel costs of getting to and from appointments, higher energy bills as a result of needing to keep warm during treatment, or the purchase of appliances to make the preparation of food easier.
