Identifying Barriers to Learning in the Presentation of Difficult History Study 


PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET. PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING. 

 
Visitor Participants

This PIS should be read in conjunction with The University privacy notice.

You are being invited to take part in a research study about how museum visitors experience museum exhibits on topics that could be considered difficult heritage as part of a student project. Before you decide whether to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

What is the purpose of the research?

The purpose of my research project is to analyse how museum curatorial strategy affects how museum visitors experience exhibits on topics of difficult heritage.

Why have I been chosen?

As a visitor to this museum exhibit, your thoughts on how difficult heritage is being presented in this exhibit would be valuable.

What would I be asked to do if I took part?

You will be asked to take a short questionnaire.

What will happen to my personal information?

In order to undertake the research project we will need to collect the following personal information/data about you:

-Your name on consent forms

-Your responses to the survey

Only the research team will have access to this information.



 
We are collecting and storing this personal information in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018 which is legislation to protect your personal information. The legal basis upon which we are using your personal information is “public interest task” and “for research purposes” if sensitive information is collected. For more information about the way we process your personal information and comply with data protection law please see our Privacy Notice for Research Participants.

The University of Manchester, as Data Controller for this project, takes responsibility for the protection of the personal information that this study is collecting about you. In order to comply with the legal obligations to protect your personal data the University has safeguards in place such as policies and procedures. All researchers are appropriately trained and your data will be looked after in the following way:

The researcher at the University of Manchester will have access to your personal identifiable information, that is data which could identify you. This data will be anonymised as soon as possible and stored securely on the university’s Research Data Storage Service (Isilon). Your consent form and the survey responses will be retained for 5 years on the University of Manchester’s Research Data Storage system.

You have a number of rights under data protection law regarding your personal information. For example you can request a copy of the information we hold about you, including survey responses. This is known as a Subject Access Request. If you would like to know more about your different rights, please consult our privacy notice for research and if you wish to contact us about your data protection rights, please email dataprotection@manchester.ac.uk or write to The Information Governance Office, Christie Building, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, M13 9PL  at the University and we will guide you through the process of exercising your rights.

Will my participation in the study be confidential?

Your participation in the study will be kept confidential to the study team and those with access to your personal information as listed above.

Personal Information- The interview responses will be recorded anonymously and your name on the consent form will not be linked to them in any way. Any information shared and not subsequently suppressed may appear in my final thesis and other published material the project may produce, such as academic papers. The anonymous survey responses will be available to other researchers upon request. The responses will be stored on University servers in accordance with the University's standard procedure for processing survey responses of research participants.

What happens if I do not want to take part or if I change my mind?

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time without giving a reason and without detriment to yourself. However, it will not be possible to remove your data from the project once it has been anonymised and forms part of the dataset as we will not be able to identify your specific data. This does not affect your data protection rights.

Will my data be used for future research?

The survey responses will be made available to other researchers upon request.

Will I be paid for participating in the research?

No. This is a volunteer activity.

What is the duration of the research?

10-15 minutes.

Where will the research be conducted?

Online.

Will the outcomes of the research be published?

The outcomes of this research will be published in a PhD thesis and possibly as academic papers.

Who has reviewed the research project?

The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures Ethics Committee.
