The 'Baby Food' Avoidance Diet (BFAD) by Dr Stephen Katona

1. Most people have a favourite food that contains both sugar and fat such as chocolate and ice-cream. Studies on rats show they gain weight rapidly when fed food containing sugar and fat.

Can you think of a naturally occurring food that contains fat and sugar? If yes, please name the food in the text box.

*

2. If there were no naturally occurring foods that contain both fat and sugar, does it make sense to have evolved to like them so much?

3. If you thought of milk as an answer to question 1 well done!
Do you think babies who love milk the most and find it difficult to stop drinking once they start would gain weight faster and have more chance of surviving than their siblings thousands of years ago?

4. After being weaned from our mother's milk, we would not have encountered naturally occurring sources of fat and sugar. However, the food industry knows it can sell a lot of replacement 'Baby Food' containing fat and sugar. We're also fond of making our own in recipes or simply adding a sweet sauce to our favourite type of meat.

Do you think when we eat food containing fat and sugar it triggers a 'Baby Food' addiction, we're all born with, increasing appetite and making us feel nurtured. *

5. Does it make sense we can control of our appetite better if we avoid triggering our 'baby food' addiction by avoiding food containing both fat and sugar? *

6. Does it make sense that the following combinations count as fat and sugar as far as your brain is concerned?

- duck in a sweet orange sauce
- roast lamb with roast potatoes (roasting turns the carbohydrate in the potato to sugar via a process called caramelization)
- sugar free but sweet tasting drink + a meal containing fat
- peanut butter + jam
- peanut butter + banana
- chips + tomato ketchup (contains sugar)
- ready cooked chicken injected with a sugar solution prior to sale
- a fat substitute that tastes like fat + a sugar substitute that tastes sweet *

7. Do you think avoiding eating fat and sugar at the same time could help you lose weight?

- Note most modern day diet regimes advise against high fat, high sugar foods. Being exposed to them after a diet finishes may be one of the main reasons people gain weight after their diet finishes. Avoiding them may be key to long term control of appetite and weight.

- Referring to food containing both fat and sugar as 'Baby Food' is a reminder that Baby Food Isn't Natural' (BFIN) for adults and children after they have been weaned.

-This approach is known as the Baby Food Avoidance Diet (BFAD) and would involve avoiding ready made fat and sugar mixtures as well as avoiding creating them in recipes, on your plate, fork etc.

- A Baby Food Free Lifestyle (BFFL) could be way of 'Being Fit For Life.'

*** If you are considering using this approach please discuss it with your doctor to see if it is suitable for you***
