High Speed Two (HS2) is Britain’s new high speed railway and is Europe’s largest infrastructure project. It will transform travel for future generations and open up new employment and training opportunities for young people across the country.
At peak construction 30,000 people will be working on the HS2 project. As well as the engineering roles you might expect, we are looking for a wide range of talent in business roles such as Finance, IT and Human Resources and other specialisms such as ecology, archaeology and design.
As a country, we need to ensure we have the right skills to deliver mega-projects both now and in the future. This is why we are investing in young people and completing work experience here at HS2 could be your first step towards a career in high speed rail.
You can choose between two career areas: environment and finance
. Each day you will have one 3 hour session focused on your chosen career area and one 3 hour session focused on skills and careers.
Each session will begin with a presentation, in which an HS2 colleague will share information about the subject area and set a task for you to complete, either individually or as a team. While you are working on the task there will be volunteers on hand to answer any questions you may have. At the end of the session you will be able to share your work and get some feedback.
At the end of the week you will have the opportunity to give a short presentation to a panel of senior leaders from HS2.
Skills and Experience
Our work experience programme will give you insight into the diversity of roles and people in the transport infrastructure sector. You will hear first-hand from people at a range of levels, from apprentices through to the senior leadership team, about what they do day to day in their roles and how their career path has developed.
The project work you are set will help you to develop business and customer awareness that is relevant to a wide range of career areas. You will be able to apply your skills in numeracy, literacy and information technology through a range of tasks.
Throughout the week we will be using the Skills Builder
approach to help you develop your Essential Skills.
As you will be working remotely from home, the programme will also challenge your self-management skills as you will need to be well organised to plan and complete tasks on time.

“Being able to work in a team was interesting because we were all from different backgrounds and thought differently. It was really rewarding to receive feedback and engage with experts in the field we were researching”.
