1. Student Participant Information and Consent Form

You are being invited to take part in this 20 minute survey for a research study because you are a student at university or Higher Education Institution (HEI), living in either university halls of residence or Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA). Before you decide whether or not to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully. Ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY?
This project aims to investigate the experiences of students in university halls of residence and Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA).  PBSA is housing built specifically by private developers for students to live in, usually taking the form of cluster flats (many rooms with shared kitchen and living areas), or private studios, both with attached leisure facilities and these days 'cool' added bonuses like cinemas, gyms, and games rooms.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ME IF I TAKE PART?
If you agree to take part you will be asked to answer a short survey which should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.
There are no right or wrong answers – we are simply interested in your experiences.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE PART?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you agree to take part in the study, but then decide to withdraw, then that is fine.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES AND RISKS OF TAKING PART?
The issues which we are asking about are of a sensitive nature but are unlikely to cause discomfort or distress to you. The aim of the project is to capture your individual lived experiences in your accommodation.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE BENEFITS OF TAKING PART?
This project will contribute to the limited existing research. This will not only contribute to existing research but should enhance the future experiences of other students.

WILL MY INFORMATION IN THIS STUDY BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?
Any data you provide will be treated in accordance with the UK Data Protection legislation.

In our reports and publications, we will use answers from the survey to help illustrate the points that are being made. Some of these answers may come from you. We will not use any information that might reveal who you are or the identity of other people. The data which has been collected will be saved in password protected folders on secure systems. Data will be destroyed in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 after the end of the research.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH STUDY?
Our analysis will involve identifying common patterns in what people have said. Once we have done this, we intend to produce a short report on the findings. We also intend to publish the findings of our study to relevant peer-reviewed academic journals. Anonymised findings may be used in reports, conferences, publications, training manuals and other research dissemination.

WHO IS ORGANISING AND FUNDING THE RESEARCH?
The research is funded by UNITE Students Ltd and is being carried out by the Halpin Partnership Ltd.
